Sticky:To Our Beloved Beta Testers:
Thank you sincerely for playing with us thus far, and we apologize for so severely dropping the ball over the recent weeks. We have recently decided to approach the game's function from a completely different angle, and we will be continuing to run it if players are still interested.
We will be applying and working on the following changes:
The game will function in Story Arcs. Due to the game being rather NPC heavy and player decision making being the focus of the game, we feel that it would be better to run the game short term with a plot arc in mind. The game will run for several months and come to a close for a break time as the next "arc" of plot is set up, provided that everything runs successfully.
There will be a limited number of characters allowed into the game. The cap will be 30 total, with 15 Fighters and 15 Sacrifices. Casts will have 3 for their cap, and 5 if they are part of a larger franchise (such as the Tales series, the Pokémon universes, the Final Fantasy series, et cetera...) Players will only be allowed one character, but you are free to continue playing with the characters you currently have for the remainder of the beta period.
The beta phase will be coming to a close within the next few months. There will be a significant amount of plot leading to the close of the beta phase, at which point further information about the next arc of the game will be worked out and announced.
ZEROs are no longer limited to bonding only with other ZEROs. They remain unable to feel pain, but we feel that only being able to bond with other ZEROs will be too limiting with a restricted number of players. They'll be able to pair with any other bondless in the game.
Players will have control of castmates that are not being played. We realize that it's limiting to not be able to control what close castmates that your character regularly interacts with (such as classmates, coworkers, or family members,) especially with a limited amount of characters and castmates. Players will therefore be able to handwave and NPC the actions of characters not currently in the game. Ideally, they shouldn't be involved more than the average character's pet- this is to give a more naturally flowing game experience, not to play six characters at once.
We are removing our leveling system. With a smaller population, measuring involvement is unimportant and irrelevant, and strength will be gauged narratively. There will be plenty of event opportunities to get a True Name with a pair of characters starting in the first arc.
Septimal Moon and Gora will have an information page. This will make the experience of being in Gora/working with Septimal Moon much clearer, so that players can freely understand what state their characters are in.
Wisdom Resurrection will have an information page. Since it is one of the common meeting points for many characters, there will be much more information on the game and any relevant events in the MMO will be included in the setting update posts.
The existing Info Posts will be updated with more information. Namely, information that more thoroughly explains what players are capable of doing, what they can get away with using their powers, and general attitudes of the world of NPCs as they stand.
In this post, we will also have a Check-In AC. If you'd like to resume playing, just comment and let us know! If you'd like to take this opportunity to drop any characters, just say which characters are staying and which are going in your comment. Over the next few days, we will be cleaning up the comms and repairing the information pages, including the Taken page. Check-in is due by February 15th, 11:59pm EST.
If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please feel free to share them with us!

Just comment to this post (with a link, if you'd like) and let us know the situation. We'll bring the NPCs where they are most needed.
The Premise
But suddenly, there's a change. You feel it. There's something surging in your body, something is different. It stays like that for a while, and within the next few days you receive an email.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Welcome to the world of magic. You're part of the universe's grand experiment... and people like you are even more special than you know. Though that seems like gibberish to you, probably. ┐(ー_ー )┌ Oh well, it's not important right now. What's important is getting you to meet the others like you. Join this game. Download your free ticket from this email (or else you have to pay every month!) and download the game software itself. Make your character! Have fun, level up some! Then follow these instructions (you'll figure it out): W066S006W001T0000 The door stays open for 8 hours each day. The "T0000" means "show up at midnight"!! Who is this weirdo? How did he get your personal email (it doesn't even look like it was properly sent to you)? But he seems to have answers...
And whether you like it or not, you are now a part of a new world. One with magic, real magic, and a world that is a lot more sinister than it seemed before.
Rules
As players and moderators of a game there are certain rules that everyone should abide by, we request that you take your time to read over this list and acquaint yourself with the some of the regulations that this community upholds. They are listed below. Any time a new rule has been added it will be posted in the OOC community (
wordspellooc) to let players know what is going on and keep them informed.
1. Drama between players is not tolerated at all. This is the internet, not serious business; we're all here to have fun. If any problems do occur, it must be brought to a moderator asap. We would prefer if you didn't take any issues to wankgate or rpanons, as it will get back to the moderators eventually.
2. No godmodding. For people who don't know what that means, it means you're deciding the actions of another person's character without that mun's consent. You need permission to do things with another persons character, you can't just be all willy-nilly about it. You get one warning if this happens and if you do it again, you will be banned.
3. The Fourth Wall is not meant to be shattered over your knee. Pay attention to posts where things are private and hackable. Just because you know something about a character, doesn't mean your character knows it. This is also known as meta-gaming and not tolerated.
4. Staying in character is an absolute must. People are also not their characters, so if someone's character is a dick to yours, it doesn't mean the mun is a dick to you. If you think someone is blatantly ooc, you are allowed to report it to the moderators. Before you do that, we do require every character to have a mandatory HMD post in their journals - take advantage of these posts to critique someone in a civilized manner.
5. All Loveless canon beats your character canon(s). This means that when you apply, you're making that character fit in the game, not the other way around. You have to think 'how would their canon convert to this type of setting?'
6. Your character is either a human, or a human. Maybe a human. We might also allow humans.
7. Plagiarism is not tolerated. This goes for your application, it should be in your own words and not copypasta from wikipedia or any other source of online information. If you're caught doing this, you will have to wait two weeks before being allowed to reapply.
8. Stay active. Our activity requirements are 1 post/log OR threads totaling 20 comments a month. A post is any IC post in
wordspell and does not require a specific number of comments to count toward activity. Activity Check is posted on the 1st of every month, and must be replied to within a week, please provide links to your character(s)' activity. We're not going to babysit you and go 'hey, why aren't you posting?' If you're on hiatus, it's also your responsibility to post it on the hiatus page.
9. If you drop a character, you must wait a week before applying or putting another character on hold. That being said, if someone drops a character that you'd like to try and play, you are not allowed to apply for a week.
10. We tolerate all forms of relationships in
wordspell. Remember though, building up to a relationship is just as much fun as diving in. If things go into nsfw territory, it must be locked to the community with warnings, and tagged on the logs.
11. There is currently a 4 character limit. You may play only two Fighters and only two Sacrifices - and you must app from each side. You can't app two Sacrifices and no Fighters, and vice versa (but you are free to have a fighter and two sacrifices, for example).
12. Valid characters to apply are as follows:

We are currently allowing:
• Canon Characters of all media types
• This includes Webcomics
• Alternate Characters; a character introduced in an anniversary edition or a re-release or something like that is perfectly welcome so long as it doesn't cut too close to the duplicate character rule.
• Original Characters
• Fandom OCs/"NPCs"/Low-Canon-Content Characters (if you've written a story that gives a backstory to some Bug Catcher from Pokémon or you expand on the personality of a League of Legends character then by all means have fun AUing them into the game. I'm sure it'll make getting icons easier.)
We are also allowing the following character types with stipulations:
• Inhuman characters are allowed, but they must be made human
• Characters from incomplete canons, given that there is sufficient information for characterization.
We are not allowing the following characters:
• Characters from the Loveless canon.
• Duplicate characters.

Activity Check and Leveling System
During Activity Check (at the beginning of the month), you will be given the chance to fill two different sections. There will be the Activity Check proper section, which is required to remain in the game... and then there will be the Leveling Up system, which is not required but rewards players for roleplaying in-setting details.
Basic and Bonus AC are posted on the 1st of every month and stay open for one week.
Basic AC Requirements
Basic AC is 1 post or 20 comments (between two threads at most) to prove you have been active. These threads must be dated for the AC month.
Bonus Activity
So, you may be wondering "hey wait a leveling system? What for?", when reading this post or either of the FAQs. But this is meant to be a reward system to allow for people to gain points. People that are better at adhering to exploring setting details will have characters that are better at fighting within the setting.
Put simply, players will be able to submit threads of their characters working with their new-found magic in order to "gain levels". This way, characters that have been through a dozen battles will be significantly more practiced than freshly introduced characters.
Every qualifying thread will be rewarded with a "Beat", and a certain number of successful requirement threads will allow the character to gain one "Point". There are only three stats in the game, and only two will ever apply to your character! The stats are as follows:
Well, okay, those are odd. How are you supposed to implement these points? What's the point of the Points? (Heh.) Well, they exist as a guideline: generally, if a team has overall a similar amount of points as their opponent, the victor is a bit up in the air. There's certain Stats that do better against other stats, which may also come into play. They play a sort of Rock-Paper-Scissors role off of each other when it comes to a tie (or a very close number), which is as follows:
The roshambo element will do no good if your opponent's stats are three or more higher than yours, in the end, but a Fighter with 1 level of Wordspell can handle a Sacrifice with 2 levels of Perception if the Bond isn't strong enough to affect the fight.
Even so, the numbers are a loose guide. In the end, it is ultimately up to all players involved how well everyone is battling, or who should win or lose. The numbers simply show which characters put in the greatest efforts to progress as a fighting pair, as well as unlocking certain in-character perks such as gaining a True Name (the good ol' -LESS name, if you're not a ZERO!) or gaining a bizarre special ability related to the -LESS name (ex., in canon "Faceless" has the ability to have their faces immediately forgotten once they leave a room). In the end, these points are meant to prove who cares about the word spell battling and who isn't as invested, thus not allowing for a lucky genius who's only been in a couple battles to trump more veteran battlers.
Leveling Perception/Wordspell
You will need to be linking threads of your character practicing skills relevant to their Stat. Threads that qualify for the stat are threads that:
The scale for leveling up the Perception/Wordspell stat is as follows:
Add the following to the end of your AC to qualify for Perception/Wordspell Beats:
Leveling The Bond
You AND your partner will be sharing this number. Either one of you may submit threads to qualify, given that the threads ARE NOT the threads that either of you has used to pass Required Activity Check. Threads that qualify for the bond are threads that:
The scale for leveling up the Bond stat is as follows, including important "landmarks":

•Perception: The Sacrifice-only stat that measures a Sacrifice's ability to discover the enemy's weakness, to perceive their own team's status, and to effectively lead their Fighter in battle (or out of it!)
•Wordspell: The Fighter-only stat that measures a Fighter's ability to cohesively string together powerful spells through good imagery, vocabulary, and precision.
•Bond: The stat that both players level together, the Bond measures how strong the team's defenses are in how well the Fighter is able to defend their Sacrifice and how much the Sacrifice is able (and willing) to endure for their Fighter.
•A good Bond will surpass the enemy's Wordspell - the defending team will be secure enough to endure the enemy's attacks.
•Strong Wordspell will overwhelm the enemy Sacrifice's Perception, binding them quickly and forcing them into defending rather than seeing through to attack.
•High Perception will find the slightest hidden weaknesses in a Bond, allowing the Fighter to pinpoint and target what weakness the enemy is desperately hiding.
The roshambo element will do no good if your opponent's stats are three or more higher than yours, in the end, but a Fighter with 1 level of Wordspell can handle a Sacrifice with 2 levels of Perception if the Bond isn't strong enough to affect the fight.

Leveling Perception/Wordspell
You will need to be linking threads of your character practicing skills relevant to their Stat. Threads that qualify for the stat are threads that:
•Shows the character participating in a Word Spell battle.
•For Perception, a thread that shows the Sacrifice looking for weaknesses in the opponent, retaining focus despite painful Restrictions, or studying the opponent outside of battle for use in battle later.
•For Wordspell, a thread that shows the Fighter finding a clever and personalized style in their spells, understanding and following the judgment of the Sacrifice, or practicing significantly expanding their vocabulary and visualization to prepare for a fight.
•Each thread may only be linked once, and cannot be a thread used for Required AC.
•There is no comment number requirement, but we will be reading these threads: explain the landmark and link a thread that has accomplished something!
•There is also no required date - if it took you a few months to get something done, or you forgot an older thread, then you are free to use it.
The scale for leveling up the Perception/Wordspell stat is as follows:
•5 Beats (five qualifying threads) are needed to reach Levels 1-3
•6 Beats (six qualifying threads) are needed to reach Levels 4-6
•7 Beats (seven qualifying threads) are needed to reach Levels 7-9
•9 Beats (nine qualifying threads) are needed to reach level 10.
•Wordspell and Perception are currently maximized at Level 10.
•Show the characters reaching new levels of trust and understanding of one another. Sharing secrets, admitting their feelings, and gaining a deeper understanding of one another lead to stronger bonds.
•Characters enduring a conflict together, be it related to spell battle and the mystery or be it some conflict in their personal lives.
The scale for leveling up the Bond stat is as follows, including important "landmarks":
•3 Beats (three qualifying threads) become 1 Point. The Point total is shared between the two players.
•You can have more than one Bond, but you can only submit for two different bonds maximum each AC.
•Once the pair reaches Level 7, they will gain their -LESS name (unless they are ZERO). They will gain the thread that binds the two of them together, which is why the True Name can now appear on them. They now cannot gain Bond Points with any other character.
•Between levels 7 and 10, characters will now require 4 Beats to gain a Point.
•Once the pair reaches Level 10, they will gain an additional magical effect related to their True Name.
•The Bond is currently maximized at Level 10.

IC Information
Name: Your character's name here.
Age: Your character's age here. If there is no canon age, designate one for them.
Canon: What series is your character from? Are they an OC?
AU History: We're not asking for a dissertation; just briefly describe your character's life. What was their childhood like if it's relevant? If your character is easy to AU (sports, slice of life, etc.), you are free to link to a wikia page, or you can write out their history yourself.
Fighter/Sacrifice: Will the character discover that they are a Fighter or a Sacrifice? Describe your decision.
Zero?: Would they become a ZERO? If yes, please describe why - is it something from canon that can be translated into them being a ZERO? Explain your reasoning to get approved as a ZERO.
Other: List any special abilities or powers they have in canon here. If you can justify the power in a low magic setting, your character is welcome to one very toned down power. It cannot be anything more powerful than Wordspell. Detail it here and we'll determine if we'll allow it. Expect, more often than not, to be without those powers if they don't have a major impact on the character's personality.
